अब सुनिए द्वितीय कथा।
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण अपनी धर्मपत्नी सत्यभामा के साथ नरकासुर नाम के असुर का वध करने निकल गए थे। उन्होंने सत्यभामा को अपना सारथी बनाया और उनकी सहायता से नरकासुर का विनाश कर दिया था। इसके बाद, श्रीकृष्ण और सत्यभामा ने असुर के बंधन से सोलह हजार कन्याओं को मुक्त करवाया। ऐसी मान्यता है कि, भगवान श्रीकृष्ण द्वारा नकारासुर का वध कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी तिथि पर ही किया गया था। इसी कारण, प्रत्येक वर्ष इस तिथि को नरक चतुर्दशी के रूप में मनाया जाता है, जिसे हम सभी छोटी दीपावाली के रूप में जानते हैं।
अब दीपावली के शुभ दिवस पर, हम घर की पुरानी, अनुपयोगी वस्तुओं को बाहर कर देते हैं, जिससे हमारा घर स्वच्छ रहता है, क्योंकि दीपावली का पर्व हमें शुद्धि का संदेश देता है। परंतु, इन दो पौराणिक कथाओं का सारांश यही है कि, दीप मात्र मिट्टी और तेल का नहीं होता, दीप वह आशा है जो प्रत्येक अंधकार को पराजित करता है।
परंतु, वास्तव में आज का अंधकार क्या है? कौन है आज का नरकासुर?

It is believed that Lord Krishna killed Narakasura on the fourteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. Therefore, this day is observed as Narak Chaturdashi every year, which we also know as Chhoti Diwali.
