रत्नाकर से महर्षि वाल्मीकि तक: अद्भुत परिवर्तन
यह कई वर्ष पूर्व की कथा है। एक जंगल में डाकू रत्नाकर रहता था, जिसके क्रोध ने तो मर्यादाओं का उल्लंघन कर दिया था। लोग उसके नाम से ही भयभीत हो जाते थे। परंतु, एक दिवस जब जंगल में नारद मुनि से रत्नाकर मिला, तो उसका जीवन ही बदल गया। क्योंकि, नारद जी ने उसे राम शब्द का जाप करने का सुझाव दिया। रत्नाकर अनेक प्रयासों के बाद भी अपने आप को राम शब्द का जाप करने के लिए तैयार नहीं कर पाया। इसी कारण, नारद जी ने उसे मरा कहने के लिए कहा।
अंततः, मरा ने राम का रूप धारण कर लिया और जैसे-जैसे उसकी तपस्या कई वर्षों तक जारी रही, उसके चारों ओर दीमक के टीले बन गए। इस सब में, रत्नाकर की निरंतर और कठोर तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान ब्रह्मा ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया और उसका नाम वाल्मीकि रखा।
तो इसी प्रकार, वाल्मीकि जी ने जंगल का अंधकार छोड़कर राम नाम का जाप शुरू किया। अर्थात, छोटे-छोटे प्रयासों से उन्होंने महानता प्राप्त करी और इतिहास में अमर हो गए।
इसी कारण, त्रेता युग में जन्मे महर्षि वाल्मीकि की स्मृति में इस दिवस को वाल्मीकि जयंती के रूप में संपूर्ण देश में मनाया जाता है। महर्षि वाल्मीकि का पूर्ण जीवन बुरे कर्मों को त्यागकर अच्छे कर्मों और भक्ति का मार्ग स्वीकार करता है, और इसी महान संदेश को लोगों तक पहुंचाने के लिए वाल्मीकि जयंती मनाई जाती है।
